Missing Property Tax Statements

Posted: Updated:

As many as one thousand property tax statements mailed out by Ward County have not made it to their destination and officials are puzzled about what happened.

Ward County sends out about 35-thousand statements each December.

After workers sent the final batch out in mid-December, they started taking calls from people saying they hadn't received their statements.

That means the stacks of mail coming in to the auditor's office have been a little light this January.

Assistant County Auditor Collette Scharpe sharp- says she's hoping people will call and request a copy of their statement if they find they haven't received one.

(Collette Scharpe, Assistant County Auditor) "We don't know what has happened to the tax statements. So basically we're just reaching out to the citizens of Ward County. If you haven't received your tax statement call us at the office and we will get out a duplicate to you. It's kind of a mystery here - where they ended up we don't know and there's a substantial amount that have gone missing.

Scharpe estimated between 500 and one thousand of the statements seem to have vanished.

Property owners have until mid-February to pay property taxes and receive a five percent discount.
