It's a tax break that would affect every North Dakotan.
Senator George Sinner of Fargo proposes the state eliminate the sales tax on clothing.
Sinner says $40 million is generated from the tax on clothing.
He says the state can do without that money and the savings will benefit all residents.
While the idea has been pitched before, Sinner says now is the time to adopt it.
"Our Governor and republicans are proposing $25 million in corporate tax relief. 82% of which goes out of state corporations. Can you tell me you'd rather see that go to Walmart or to our own people? I think the answer is very clear. We need that money to stay in North Dakota," says Sinner.
Minnesota currently has no sales tax on clothing.
However, Minnesota lawmakers are considering adopting the sales tax because of that state's budget problems.
