Grenstiner Sentenced to Life in Prison with Parole

Posted:

Nearly one year after 83-year-old Ann Grenstiner is found beaten to death in her Bismarck home.

Ann's son is sentenced to life in prison for the murder.

This afternoon, Dean Grenstiner was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the murder of his mother last March.

He will serve 30 years in prison before he is considered for parole.

At Grenstiner's sentence hearing, Prosecutor Pam Nesvig read a letter to Dean, written by his two brothers.

In it, they say Ann used to pray for what would happen to her son Dean, when she died.

"You murdered our mother, a sister, aunt, grandmother, and a wonderful and kind person, I hope this court punishes you for this crime and to the fullest extent of North Dakota law, I hope you spend the rest of your life thinking about what you did, every second, minute hour, day month and year, for the rest of your life."

"goodbye Dean, and may God forgive you for what you've done."

As part of the plea agreement, a theft charge facing Grenstiner was dismissed.

He will be around 70 years old before he is considered for parole.

June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness month. The disorder affects thousands of combat veterans every year, many of whom never seek out help. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs,
The Veterans Affairs Clinic in Fargo has been working on their outreach across the state, they want more soldiers to get screened, but can't force it either.
