City Will Try For More CDBG Funds

Posted: Updated:

The city of Minot may qualify for more federal funds for flood recovery under legislation the President is expected to sign soon.

The Hurricane Sandy Relief Bill has passed both the House and Senate.

It includes 16 billion dollars in Community Development Block Grant money for areas hit by disasters from 2011 through 2013.

That means Minot and Ward County would have the chance to compete for more CDBG funds.

Minot City Finance Director Cindy Hemphill says that the city of Minot would need to put in an application demonstrating that the city has additional needs and what those needs are.

(Cindy Hemphill, City Finance Director, Minot) "Our unmet needs shows that there is almost a 220-million dollar need just from what we have identified from HUD. That gives you an idea of how high we could go but I don't believe we would ever get that amount of money, we will certainly try. I think that we can definitely support that type of a need that the city has."

The Secretary of HUD has approximately 45 days to write the rules on how to apply for these extra CDBG Funds.
