Discrimination Bill - KXNet - Bismarck/Minot/Williston/Dickinson

Discrimination Bill

Posted: Updated:

Senators have defeated a bill to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Senate Bill 2252 would have allowed people to seek recourse against an employer or landlord if they were fired or evicted because they were gay, lesbian or bisexual.
The bill was voted down shortly after Senators addressed an amendment.
The amendment eliminated protections for those who are discriminated against because of their sexual orientation.
   That amendment was also defeated.

(Sen. David Hogue / (R) Minot) "It declares that the state of ND does not condone discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. But that's as far as it goes. It declares a policy, but it does not give individuals who felt they were discriminated against any remedy or cause of action or right to sue."

(Sen. Mac Schneider / (D) Grand Forks) "If we proceed with these amendments and they become part of the century code, we are saying to thousands of North Dakotan's from all walks of life and their family members that care for them that we get that discrimination happens. We understand that it's wrong, but if it happens to you, you are on your own."

The bill failed by a vote of 26-21.
