Nearly a year and a half after the Mouse River flood of 2011, the first step is taken toward better flood protection.
The State Water Commission will cover the cost of a reconnaissance study.
Typically the Corp of Engineers does the study but they currently don't have the spending authority to do so.
The study will be done by an engineering firm that works with the water commission.
Bruce Engelhardt says it's a first step, but also an important step toward better protection along the mouse river.
"As commissioner Foley from the Minot area this is like the baby's first step, but it's an important first step to get the process started, hopefully get corp participation and get better flood control," Director of Water Development Division Bruce Engelhardt said.

Engelhardt says one of the major upgrades the flood protection would entail --- is setting dikes back further from where they currently are and making them taller.
