North Dakota makes the cover of the March issue of National Geographic.
The photo shows a bright orange flame with the headline "America Strikes Oil" with the subtitle the promise and risk of fracking.
The article features a number of photos and maps that hi-lite the rapid development.
Many remember the last time North Dakota was featured in the magazine in January of 2008.
That issue features empty barns and was titled "The Emptied Prairie."
Now days national coverage barely turns a head.
Sometimes I think we have to step back and think of all that national exposure but The New York Times, National Geographic and other stations and we really don't pay all that much attention to them anymore. I got a couple of emails from Washington, D.C. about you know the National Geographic story is it not great, is it this and I said I thought it was pretty good as a North Dakotan I kind of liked it," says Ron Ness of the North Dakota Petroleum Council.
The issue has been a hot seller in North Dakota. Barnes and Noble in Bismarck is sold out and has already put in an order for fifty more copies.
North Dakota is also featured in the March edition of Harper's Magazine. The front cover shows an oil flare and well with the title "The Price of North Dakota's Fracking Boom."
