10 Year Old Girl Earns Top Archery Honors

Posted:

One local ten year old girl wins national honors in what you might think of as a sport for boys.
And she's only been shooting for a year in a half.
Reporter Sarah Gustin has the story.

At the young age of only 10.
This Wilton Fourth Grader knows how to "ready--aim--fire."
I love it more than 100%.
Kinley Hetletved brought home reserve champion honors from the National Field Archery Association's Midwest Indoor Sectional.
(Kinley Hetletved / 10 yr old archer) "You have to focus. and you have to be concentrated on what you are doing. You have to be concentrated on where you are going to hit. You cannot punch your trigger. otherwise it will hit where you don't want to hit."
What does it take to be at the top?
During competition Kinley hit a three inch bull's eye circle 58 out of 60 times the first day.
52 of 60 times the second day.
Not only is that a little spot to aim for, but the competition is tough---archers from North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota all come to compete.
(Kinley Hetletved / 10 yr old archer) "I shot a 292 I dropped 8 arrows out of 300 because my arm was tired. And there was this other girl named Hanna that shot a perfect score and I told her that she was a good shooter."
Shooting is nothing new to this school girl.
Four days a week, You'll find Kinley at the archery range---not only competing with other archers her age, but aganist those more than twice her age.
(Kinley Hetletved / 10 yr old archer) "I shoot aganist adults. A robin hood is where you hit an arrow in a target and you hit an arrow at the same arrow and split the arrow. My first arrow was here and there were 12 and 13 year old boys and they were like what! you shot a robin hood and you are younger than us."
A kid who's always got her eye on the bulls eye.
(Kinley Hetletved / 10 yr old archer) "I know it's kinda funny to say now. But, I want to be in the Olympics and get a gold like Denise Parker."

The National Field Archery Association was founded in 1939.
