AARP and the IRS have teamed up to help people with simple tax returns file and do it at a bare minimum cost.
The Mid-Dakota Chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting the AARP tax filing help again this year in Minot. Tax Commissioner Cory Fong was in the Magic City this week touring the help center. He says there's no age or income threshold to qualify for help as long as it is a simple tax return.
(Cory Fong, ND Tax Commissioner) "They have a lot of opportunity to help tax payers who don't necessarily want to go spend a bunch of money with a paid preparer or commercial preparer who might have maybe a small refund to get back. Some cases they'll go to a commercial preparer, they'll spend more money on the preparation services than the amount they're getting back."
The free service in Minot is by appointment only because of the success of the program. That number is 852-2828. For other free locations, log on to the tax department website at www.nd.gov/tax.
