An effort to fund private schools was defeated in the North Dakota House last week, but now lawmakers propose a different way of going about the same idea.
Many lawmakers questioned the bill's constitutionality when debated on the House floor.
Now, some legislators are hoping North Dakota voters can change the section of the constitution that was holding up the idea.
The measure if approved would remove language precluding the state from supporting nonpublic institutions that provide K-12 education.
(Rep. Bette Grande / (R) Fargo) "I think it's a great open dialog. The citizens need to understand what's there and why it's there and how they want to proceed forward. That's why this would go on the ballot for people to decide if this is how they want to proceed in the educational funding."
If approved by the legislature, the constitutional amendment would go to voters to decide in the 2014 general election.
