Grant Would Help Provide Job Training Skills For Tribal Colleges

Posted:

A Bill on its way to the North Dakota House would provide better job training skills for students who attend the five tribal colleges.

Senate Bill 2218 would provide five million dollars for workforce development grants.

The grants would be distributed across the five tribal colleges for educational and job training programs.

Right now the unemployment rate on North Dakota's reservations is around 60 to 65 percent.

"The poverty rates particularly in Rolette and Benson and Sioux Counties, which are three of our Tribal Colleges are located, have twice the U.S. poverty rate at about 33 percent," Cindy Lindquist said.

Earlier in the Legislative Session the senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 2218.

The bill will go to the House next week.
