Lawrence Welk Homestead Sale

Posted:

The home of a well known performer could soon have a new owner.

Lawrence Welk grew up in Strasburg.
The Schwab sisters have maintained the homestead for years, but recently approached the state historical society about buying the property.
The society says it's a popular spot and the owners would like to see it become a state sight.

(Lorna Meidinger / ND State Historical Society) "His parents claimed the homestead in 1893, he was born there March 11, 1903. He lived there for 21 years. Some of the stories about him are that he tried to start building a violin at the age of three. So learning all of his musical abilities and ambitions, as well as getting that ethic that you get from growing up in rural North Dakota."

Meidinger says the option of the state historical society buying the property will be dependent upon the amount of funding from the state legislature.
