Weather Junkies Wanted

Posted: Updated:

Calling all weather junkies.  The National Weather Service needs you.

They're partnering with the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network -- CoCoRaHS, for short -- to find volunteer weather observers across North Dakota.  No special skills are required -- and they provide free training.  Young and old are encouraged to join up.

"All you have to do is a love of weather.  You need to go out and measure the precipitation every time we have rain, hail or snow, and log that on a computer and send it into the CoCoRaHS Network.  We have many observers here in Bismarck, but once you get outside of Bismarck, especially here in North Dakota, we're very sparsely populated.  Knowing that your observation will go to help the National Weather Service or any other group is very rewarding," says Todd Hamilton, Senior Meteorologist, National Weather Service, Bismarck.

So if you've ever wondered how the National Weather Service and all those TV weather anchors have so much information about so many places, now you know.  It's all those volunteer weather observers across the country.

If you think you might be interested in volunteering, go to www.cocorahs.org, for more information.
