Explosion Blows a Portion of a Building's Roof Out

Posted: Updated:

A fire captain says lives could have been lost, but there are luckily no serious injuries following an explosion inside of a building along Yegen road.

Workers inside a Zircon building were attempting to make a repair on a crew oil tank earlier Monday afternoon.

Fire responders say the professionals had purged the tank- and thought everything was safe, but as soon as they touched it with a welder, there was a flash explosion.

The explosion blew a portion of the roof out, and you could see pieces of insulation and debris far away from the building.

"They did have a flash explosion, took a chunk of the roof off the building, luckily no one was seriously injured, the fire was a flash fire, it flashed and went back out again, so other than the damage to the building and some people with some singed hair, we're pretty lucky nobody else got hurt." says fire captain Jesse Smith.

Fire captain Jesse Smith says emergency crews checked out three of the workers on scene for minor injuries, but no one was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
