Governor Signs Abortion Bills

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple has signed into law three bills limiting abortions in the state.

The three bills are HB1305 which bans abortions for gender selection or due to genetic abnormalities; HB1456 which bans abortions after a heartbeat can be detected in a fetus; SB2305 which requires doctors performing abortions to have admitting and staff privileges at a nearby hospital.

The governor says the likelyhood of HB1456, the ban after detection of a heartbeat, surviving a court challenge remains in question but is still a legitimate attempt by a state legislature to find the boundaries of Roe v. Wade, the US Supreme Court decision that declared abortion a constitutionally-protected right.  Dalrymple called on legislators to appropriate funds for legal challenges that will likely follow the enactment of the law.
