Helms Calls Rig Collapse Near Killdeer "Very Unusual"

We have an update on the oil rig that collapsed northwest of Killdeer Wednesday.

Lynn Helms of the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division says a leg collapsed as the rig was begin taken down to move.

Helms says it's "very unusual" for this to happen and he can't recall the last time one of the new modern "walking rigs" collapsed.

Helms says it was a Precision Drilling Rig that has just finished the last of a six well pad for Hess.

He says he knows there were no fatalities but doesn't know if anyone was injured.

A spokesperson for OSHA says they are en route and also doesn't know if anyone was injured in the accident.

The rig collapsed at a site about ten miles northwest of Killdeer between the Little Missouri River and the Killdeer Mountains.
