March 30th is National Doctors' Day

Posted: Updated:

You may not have known this, but today is National Doctors' Day.  Every year, March 30th commemorates the contributions physicians make to individual lives and to the community.

"We have to remember that when the entire city is sleeping and it's 2:00 in the morning and minus 20 degrees, but somebody is sick and needs to be taken care of, there are health care providers available that provide the best care that can be given in our community," says Shiraz Hyder, M.D., VP Medical Affairs, St. Alexius Medical Center.

In the coming years, that level of care may be compromised, as physician numbers fail to keep pace with the need.  According to the American Association of Medical Colleges, by 2020, the United States is expected to be short 90,000 physicians.

"Healthcare has become more stressful than it used to be many decades ago, and the younger generation is looking for more of a quality of life in the professions they choose.  No matter what the stress, and the regulations and other issues are, to me, there's no other profession that comes close to making a difference when it comes to medicine," says Dr. Hyder.

Doctors' Day was first recognized in 1933, but it wasn't until 1990 that legislation was introduced in the U.S. House and Senate to officially establish a National Doctors' Day.
