The call volume has more than doubled for Minot Rural Fire Department in the past several years.
Cheif Rex Weltikol says the city's borders are growing, and with that, so is the area rural firefighters respond.
With that comes a need for additional equipment.
Essentials are covered by the tax base --- but Weltikol says it costs $7,000 to 'bunker up' one firefighter with two sets of gear.
That doesn't leave a lot of extra money.
That's one reason Minot Rural Fire Department is hosting a free-will donation pancake breakfast this Sunday.
(Rex Weltikol, Minot Rural Fire Department) "We have a pancake breakfast for a couple of reasons: we want the public to see what we have, we try to educate them on what we do here. At the same time, give them a good meal. A lot of people enjoy that. They get to come and see what the Rural Fire Department is all about."
There are about 40 people on staff at Minot Rural Fire Department, but Weltikol says like other businesses, it's hard to keep staff when long hours in the oil field prevent some from volunteering.
Pancakes will be served Sunday from 7 to 1.
Bunker boots will be set up at the entrance for a free will donation.
