National Guard Trains For Battling Wildfires

Many of us see the North Dakota National Guard helping pile sandbags and protecting homes from floodwaters, but today they're training for the other extreme, fighting fires.

This afternoon around 20 National Guard members strap on 45 pound vests before they go on a three mile march.

The vests add on the weight Guard members would have to carry if they were fighting a wild fire.

None of the Soldiers have been called to fight a fire with the Guard, but they know the training is beneficial, especially with the drought conditions much of the state is experiencing.

"Kind of an idea how much you're allowed to carry and how heavy it's going to be, plus you're working with all that on so you need to get used to carrying all that weight and function," Staff Sgt. Rick Weeg said.

Guard members also took a classroom course on fighting wildfires before going on their three mile march.
