The pre-thaw Lake Darling Dam releases come with an extra warning: ice jams.
Ward County Emergency Manager Amanda Schooling says ice jams are prevalent near bridges.
County crews, rural police and fire departments are monitoring flood prone areas.
The highway department does have equipment on hand to break up ice jams and the water board has a contractor on stand by for plugged culverts.
Schooling says if you notice what could be a problem with the water flow, contact central dispatch at 852-0111.
(Amanda Schooling, Ward County Emergency Manager) "Typically our main areas of concern are near the bridges because that's usually where ice jams happen in our area. We do have people constantly going out to look at them multiple times a day, day and night time so we hopefully have a very good eye on the ice."
She says low lying areas outside of Foxholm or Logan are prone to flooding where the levees are lower.
County crews are also monitoring the Des Lacs River --- where the thaw has been slow to reach.
The county commission approved free sandbags and sand on Tuesday --- those should be made available early this week.
Sandbag sites are being arranged in Minot, Burlington, Donnybrook, Carpio and Sawyer.
