Train Track Repairs Planned

Billions of dollars are being spent to repair train tracks in North Dakota.

Dan Wogsland is the executive Director of the North Dakota Grain Growers.

Wogsland says BNSF is spending 4.1 billion dollars to maintain and upgrade its rail system this year.

He says that's the most money the company has ever spent in maintenance and upgrades.

He says many of those upgrades will happen right here in North Dakota--most in the northern part of the state as well as in the Hettinger area.

Wogsland says the oil industry has put a lot of pressure on the railway to move product faster.

(Dan Wogsland / ND Grain Growers) "They all compete on the same track. Before much of that oil moving south so we didn't have competition, we as agriculture didn't have competition to our eastern markets and our western markets. That's not the case anymore. Oil is now moving east and west as well. So there is tremendous competition on only very few rail lines."

Wogsland says last year BNSF spent 3.6 billion dollars on track and maintenance.
