Williston Rec Center Construction Begins

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of young people have moved to the Williston area for jobs in the energy industry.

And soon, the city of Williston will be offering a new place to burn off some energy.

In this week's Eye on Energy, Gary Brode shows us the progress on the huge new Recreation Center.

To stand inside the Williston Area Recreation Center even while in its early construction phase is awe inspiring.

Construction on the $78 million project is underway and the project is expected to be finished in less than a year.

(Darin Krueger, Executive Director, Williston Parks and Rec.) "We're projected to be in this building by March of next year. So we're under a year of having a place for kids and families to have a blast so its pretty exciting.

This state of the art facility is 250,000 square feet.

That's triple the size of Williston's Walmart.

Willistonparks.com offers up to date visuals of the A.R.C.

Here you can see just how fast construction has been moving since the first wall was placed in mid-February.

(Marc Mellmer, Construction Manager) "We're going 100 miles per hour right now. We got a big head of steam and we have about 85 guys on site today and we hope to increase that real soon. And continue to get this building enclosed as quick as possible."

(Gary Brode, gbrode@kxnet.com) "Krueger believes that this rec. center will not only be one of the main attractions for Williston but the entire state of North Dakota."

(Darin Krueger, Executive Director, Williston Parks and Rec.) "Our goal is to bring everything to Williston. Now they're going to say 'Hey! When are we going to Williston? I want to go to that rec. center and play.' We hope, that's our goal."

With an indoor track, four basketball courts, a pool with a lazy river, and a gym facility nearly the size of a football field, there is a good chance that goal will be achieved.
