Coming to Bismarck This Summer -- "Avenue of the Flags"

Posted: Updated:

Coming to Bismarck this Summer -- "Avenue of the Flags."  Running along State Street from I-94 to the Capitol, flags will be displayed every 100 feet on five special holidays.

The project was the brainchild of the Optimist Club of Bismarck.  Bismarck City Commissioners approved "Avenue of the Flags" earlier this evening.

"This is the State Capitol.  It just seems appropriate that we should have the roads, primary roads, coming into the State Capitol marked in a patriotic fashion," says Russ Harkness, Optimist Club of Bismarck.

The flags will go up at dawn and come down at dusk on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day.  The Optimist Club says they hope to raise the necessary $5,000 in time for Memorial Day.  If not, they'll aim to premiere "Avenue of the Flags" -- when else? -- on "Flag Day" in June.
