Here's a sure sign that spring is here -- the start of May means boats are now allowed on Lake Darling for fishing!
Of course...to get on the lake, you'll first have to break through the heavy layer of ice that still covers most of it!
Duane Anderson with the Upper Souris Refuge says he can't remember a time when ice stayed around this long...
Certain areas of the reservoir have upwards of a foot still.
He says there have been years where chunks of ice were still present...but you could still get out with your boat to wet a line.
This year though there will be a wait -- perhaps for another week or two.
(Duane Anderson - Upper Souris Wildlife Refuge) "I have been here for many many years and I haven't seen these conditions right now and I was surprised that maybe a boat or two hadn't shown up yet this morning so they understand. This has been an extremely unusual spring like we all know."
Anderson says when water does open up, boaters won't be able to use boat ramp number three for some time -- the road to it is submerged right now.
