Fire Damages Iconic Bismarck Building

Posted: Updated:

A landmark Bismarck structure sustains substantial fire damage.  Thanks to a passerby, the Manhattan Building is spared even more harm.

Bismarck Fire Department responded just after 12:30 this morning and encountered fire, smoke and heat.  Heavy damage is limited to the lower level, although smoke and soot are throughout the building.  No one was injured, but numerous businesses are impacted.  Damage is currently estimated to be half a million dollars, at a minimum.

"I've never experienced a fire before.  We were in the flood a couple years ago.  We've been in a hurricane and numerous things.  So I guess I'm going to add a fire to the list.  But we're okay," says Jan Hoge, Co-Owner, Manhattan Building.

Fire crews remained on the scene for five hours removing smoke and heat from the building.  The fire is believed to be accidental, possibly electrical in nature.
