Senator Heitkamp Visits Afghanistan

Posted:

Senator Heidi Heitkamp is back from a week long trip to Asia.

Heitkamp made stops in Turkey, Syria, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

While in Afghanistan she met with North Dakota soldiers.

The Senator says she was impressed by the relationship between U.S. troops and the Afghan troops.

"I think that they see what the importance of the missions, the importance of the work they're doing and they know that Afghanistan is a different place than it was five years ago," Senator Heidi Heitkamp said.

This is a time of transition for both the Afghan troops and U.S. troops.

Heitkamp says there are signs of the U.S. pulling out of Afghanistan by the end of next year.

"Everyone is committed to making this transition by the end of 2014, we saw huge facilities that are now moving American Equipment back home, moving our supplies, bringing our equipment back home so they can be deployed somewhere else," Heitkamp said.

Heitkamp also says the state's economic and trade relationship with Turkey is something North Dakotans will be hearing more and more about.
