Ladies Set Their Sights on Firearm Safety

Posted: Updated:

Concealed weapons licenses issued in oil-producing counties are up across the board.

In Dunn County, the number of new and renewed licenses increased from 24 in 2011 to 185 in 2012.

A recent gun safety class in the area also filled up fast.

Amber Schatz takes us to Dunn County where more ladies are learning gun safety.

From hand guns to rifles, ladies living in oil country are learning how to shoot safely.

"So many ladies feel uncomfortable about firearms, we give them a chance to get used to them, understand how they work." says Cathy Logosz, Chairman of Ladies Firearm Safety, Committee of Slope Area Rifle and Pistol Club.

"I think a lot of women are intimidated by guns so I think this is a great class and a great opportunity for a lot of women." says Sheila Dooley and Ashtyn Dooley/Dickinson.

Sheila and Ashtyn Dooley are a mother-daughter combo taking part in this gun safety class.

Although they took hunter's safety together in Wyoming, they're continuing their education now living in Dickinson.

"We have guns and we want to be more familiar with them and be safe and have some fun--I just want to shoot." says Sheila and Ashtyn.

"You should see the grins on these ladies faces, they really enjoy it." says Logosz.

Cathy Logosz says this is their 8th ladies event at the Slope Area Rifle Range, and this class filled up fast.

"If they choose to get into self defense, if they choose to get into hunting, if they choose to get into concealed carry, they have that option." says Logosz.

Something else that's hard to miss, the change in scenery in Dunn county.

"They're good neighbors, they've promised to help the road, because truck traffic is hard on it." says Logosz.

On the flip side, Logosz says the club's members have doubled or tripled because of the population increase.

Bringing men and women from all over.

Statewide, concealed weapons licenses increased by more than double from 2011 to 2012.
