Around Town -- May 10, 2013

Business is booming in Bismarck.  In fact, they're all "around" in this week's "Around Town."

You probably know about Jay's Pawn Shop, a Bismarck fixture for nearly three decades, but you might not know about Personal Defense Center that has taken up residence in the same building.  They've installed a state-of-the-art indoor shooting range.  Nicholas Couture, President of Personal Defense Center, says "Seeing that in North Dakota, we have Winter more often than we have Summer, so a lot of people can come in and shoot from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week."

They say they'll help you refine your skills, qualify for a concealed carry permit, and maintain your piece in their gunsmith shop.  They also offer home safety, first aid and defensive driving courses.  And if you find you ever need fingerprinting or passport photographs, they'll take care of with that too.  There's more at

G & R Controls, together with Balancing Professionals, has expanded to Bismarck.  Based in Sioux Falls, the companies offer energy management services and building automation and temperature control systems.  With this expansion to the Bismarck area, the companies say they'll be better able to serve new and existing customers in the Dakota Territories.  They expect to hire to eight to ten field personnel in the near future.

Bobcat breaks ground this Monday.  At 9 a.m., a ceremony will mark the beginning of a 20 million dollar Acceleration Center at the Northern Plains Commerce Centre.  The company says the new facility will be a state-of-the-art testing and innovation center.  Governor Dalrymple, U.S. Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp, U.S. Representative Kevin Cramer, and Bismarck Mayor John Warford will all be there to officially kick-off construction.

And here's a first for Furniture Row.  Next Saturday marks the 63rd anniversary of Armed Forces Day.  In observance, Furniture Row will host Military Appreciation Night nationwide on Friday, May 17th.  From 3 to 9 p.m., all active duty and former military are invited to come celebrate with refreshments and prizes.
