Jack Abfalter has tough break before state track

Bismarck, ND -

This year-- Century high School's Jack Abfalter helped the soccer team win a state title-- the hockey team get to the semi finals of the state tournament-- and has been a key part of the track and field team in the pole vault and 400 meter events.
Jon Schaeffer has more on how his track and field season took an unexpected turn just weeks ago.

JACK ABFALTER/ CENTURY POLE VAULTER: It's a great feeling going through the air and just it's like freedom when you're up that high kind.

JON SCHAEFFER/ KX SPORTS: For Jack Abfalter-- Pole vaulting runs in his veins.

JACK ABFALTER/CENTURY POLE VAULTER: My grandpa was a pole vaulter along with my dad in high school. I just had the opportunity in seventh grade to just kind of get into and I decided to.

JON SCHAEFFER/ KX SPORTS: In his Junior year at Century-- Jack has the highest state qualifying vault at 13 feet 9 inches --making him a frontrunner to win a title at the state meet. That all changed after the Karlgaard meet at the Community Bowl in Bismarck.

JACK ABFALTER/ CENTURY POLE VAULTER: We had the event it was completely completed through and me and my coach we decided just to get a little practice in on a new pole. Just went through my basic vault and it just didn't go my way. Went up just kinda came back down the wrong way didn't land on the mat just landed sideways on my leg.

JON SCHAEFFER/ KX SPORTS: When Jack landed he knew something was wrong.

JACK ABFALTER/ CENTURY POLE VAULTER: I heard my leg break and I look down and I see my leg broken and I just went into shock. When I was laying down and I was kind of like shouting for help and I was scared I mean I definitely heard people around me screaming and everyone around me was just kind of scared.

JON SCHAEFFER/ KX SPORTS: He spent nearly a week in the hospital having three surgeries, including one to put a rod and three screws in to repair a broken Tibia and Fibula in his left leg.
He will have 4 to 5 months of recovery followed by plenty of rehab.
Most likely Jack will also miss soccer this fall.

JACK ABFALTER/ CENTURY POLE VAULTER: I know a couple of vaulters who have had pretty bad injuries themselves and I mean you just gotta have the right mind set and come back off of it.

JON SCHAEFFER/ KX SPORTS: WIth his senior season still in front of him Jack's motivation is simple.

JACK ABFALTER/ CENTURY POLE VAULTER: It was hard going out this way for my junior year but I've got my senior year and I've also got hockey and just gotta look toward next year's track season and just go out get that title again.

JON SCHAEFFER/ KX SPORTS: Jack says there is sure to be nerves the first few times he gets back on the vault-- but the important thing is that he'll be competing once again.
