A Dakota College at Bottineau athlete was killed in a drive-by shooting in his native Chicago this week.
19-year-old Dashamone, or DeShaun,
McCarty was riding in the back seat of a car with friends on Wednesday when their car was sprayed with bullets.
McCarty died of his wounds yesterday.
McCarty was a three-sport standout athlete at his Chicago-area high school and came to Bottineau to play football and basketball for the Lumberjacks.
His best friend from high school said DeShaun was a giving person.
(Ryan Jones, McCarty's High School Friend) "He was a great person, if he had a dollar he'd share it with you - he was just a caring person. It was about sports and being successful and that's what he was doing, just wrong place, wrong time."
(Dr. Ken Grosz, Dakota College at Bottineau President) "He was perhaps the hardest worker on the basketball team. He was respected and looked up to by his teammates. He was kind of the guy they needed to calm them down in intense moments and the kind of guy who would get them fired up when they needed firing up. So he was really a team leader."
There have been no arrests in the shooting case in the Chicago suburb of Maywood.
