Jackie Dockter Memorial Tennis Tournament

Posted: Updated:

As the weather heats up outside, so do outdoor sports.

Stephanie Scheurer takes us to a special tournament at the Tom O'Leary tennis courts.

It's the perfect day to be outside in the sun.

And those who love tennis are eager to serve it up at this four day tournament.

Bob Cordova, Tournament Director, says "It's open to anyone from anywhere. We get entrants from South Dakota, Montana, sometimes Minnesota, but mostly, most of the people are Bismarck/Mandan residents."

Stephanie Scheurer, standup: "Tennis tournaments take place year round, but the mission of this tournament is to celebrate the life of Jackie Dockter."

Jerry Dockter, Jackie's Father says, "She played for St. Mary's and she taught tennis to junior kids, little kids and unfortunately she passed away in the fall of 1999 and she just loved to play tennis and she was out here a lot and these are the courts that she played at."

This is the 13th Annual Jackie Dockter Memorial Tennis Tournament.

Jerry and his wife look forward to this event every year and enjoy supporting the players.

Even though Jackie isn't here to compete, she's here in spirit and remains a symbol in the community with many young tennis players following in her footsteps.

Maria Wanzek says, "I think it's fun just because you kind of just get to do your own thing, and play by yourself and you just try your hardest."

For Jackie, the love of this game couldn't be matched and her memory will forever be remembered in this community and on the courts.

In Bismarck, Stephanie Scheurer, KX news.

The tournament begins today and runs through Sunday.
