Hope Village Milestone

Posted: Updated:

The second 'Summer of Hope' is well underway in Minot thanks to the efforts of Hope Village.

The volunteer effort to rebuild homes in the valley flooded two years ago pushes forward...and just recently hit quite an impressive mark.

Perry Olson tells us about that today.

Thousands of volunteers have racked up thousands of hours of rebuilding over the last two years. In fact, this spring, 100 thousand hours of donated help was achieved...

(Steve Carbno - Hope Village Coordinator) "We're actually creeping up on 105K hours that have been served by volunteers at Hope Village and that is over 1.75 million dollars in in-kind donations."

It's work that has been done by people from all over the country that have flocked to the region -- and they have been house savers for many...

(Steve Carbno - Hope Village Coordinator) "If the folks that were impacted by this flood were have to pay for that labor, we would not be where we are in trying to get Minot back on its feet again."

This month the work has continued -- with a group from Joplin, Missouri among others. The tornado ravaged town and Minot share a common bond now...and helping in here seemed like the thing to do...

(Jason Glaskey - Joplin, MO Volunteer) "Folks in Minot are always concerned when the water levels rise and people in Joplin are always concerned when the thunder rolls and rain clouds are coming toward town. We definitely have connections that way."

Groups like them continue to come -- no small feat considering all the options for disaster response in the country...

(Steve Carbno - Hope Village Coordinator) "We have not had anyone cancel and say that they are going to OK so that shows us that the commitment is there."

And that means homes keep getting checked off the list -- about 100 left to go or so...

(Steve Carbno - Hope Village Coordinator) "Everyday that we take a step forward we hope to continue to reduce those numbers as the season continues."
