6th Annual Downtowners' Rip Roarin' Ribfest In Full Swing

Posted: Updated:

The smell is in the air -- ribbers and rib samplers are everywhere.  The 6th Annual Downtowners' Rip Roarin' Ribfest is in full swing.  KX caught up with last year's rib champ, Dennis Carrino, who had a few words to say about the Bismarck event.

"Well, I'll tell you what, this is, should be, one of the premiere events that Bismarck has per year," says Dennis Carrino of Porky-N-Beans BBQ Company, Port St. Lucie, Florida.  From the looks on the faces at the Ribfest, it is.  "And the reason why I say that is because when you come to a Ribfest, you have totally fresh products -- nothing frozen, no hamburgers, hot dogs, none of that stuff.  It's all about BBQ," says Carrino.

Dennis Carrino should know.  He's nabbed 547 national rib titles and is the reigning "ribber" from last year's rib fest.  "A ribber is a person that comes out here at 7:00 in the morning, who cooks 24 hours a day, a barbecue.  I mean, this is our life.  Ribs is what we do, and if we don't do it right, we're out of business -- and we've been in business 35 years," says Carrino.

Rib samplers from as far away as California agree:  These ribbers are doing it right in Bismarck.  Says Julian Craig of Los Angeles, "It's different from California, but the smell in the air, ya know, the vibes, it's a great place.  I like it."

That's what these ribbers like to hear.  To pull it off and keep people coming back for more, ribbers hire local workers and purchase lots of local products.  "There was $4,000 in products that came in yesterday.  Where did that come from?  Right here in Bismarck.  It's the best that you're ever going to have and you're not going to see us again until next year, so you better get down here," says Carrino.

"It's just Summer and ribs.  Can't get any better than that, really," says 12-year old Logan Lies of Bismarck.

If you want to get your ribs on, they'll only be here in Bismarck through Saturday -- 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. -- outside the Civic Center.  There's live entertainment every night at 7:30 p.m., a beer tent for adults, and inflatable games for the kids.
