Residents Concerned About Oilfield Waste Being Dumped In McLean County

Posted:
Washburn, ND -

Frustrated residents voice their concerns over oil field waste being dumped near Underwood.

Great River Energy is asking for a permit from McLean County to dispose oil field waste at a location southwest of Underwood.

This afternoon the county zoning commission meets to decide whether or not to recommend approval of the permit to the county commission.

Great River Energy officials say the waste would not be radioactive waste, but those who live in the county are worried about the problems this landfill could create.

The McLean County courtroom was packed Monday, as residents voice their opinions on oil field waste being dumped at this location in McLean County.

"I'm afraid that a generation or two maybe even three down the line that we're going to have children who have problems and is it going to be traced back to that, if it is, it's a shame that we made decisions that effected future generations," Larry Clark said.

Great River Energy says they won't accept Radioactive waste.

"Our landfill is designed to be protective of human health and the environment," Diane Stockdill said.

In addition to the health problems this oil field waste could bring, residents are also worried about increase in truck traffic along highway 83

"The amount of trucks delivering to this site is at a given number whatever that is, but how much is it going to increase in the future," Dennis Kost said.

The waste that would be accepted would include solidified drill cuttings and Petroleum contaminated soil --- waste these residents say doesn't belong in McLean county.

"We just need to say no, go someplace else, there's other places that deal with it, not our county," Clark said.

"Most of the oil activity is in the west, I think they need to take care of that stuff out there instead of trucking it way out here."

The County Commission will make a decision on whether or not to grant the permit on July 16th.

The county zoning commission did not make a recommendation at today's meeting.

The public is invited to attend the county commission meeting on July 16th, where the commission could decide to grant Great River Energy the permit.
