Wilton Fire Department Opens Station in Baldwin

Baldwin, ND -

A growing Burleigh County has lead to the Wilton Fire Department expanding...

This is the Baldwin station.

The base for nine volunteer fire fighters from the Wilton department.

But the interesting thing about this fire station -- is that it is the old Baldwin school.

The school house now houses three trucks, gear, an office and kitchen.

The classrooms are being used as meeting and training rooms and maybe someday will be turned into sleeping quarters for firefighters.

Chief JD Youngbird says the Baldwin station is needed because of the rapidly increasing population north of Bismarck.

"The population, the new houses and stuff, there are many developments coming into our area. We do need to have quicker response. Instead of coming from 12 miles, we will be able to respond from this place five miles in five minutes," says Youngbird.

Wilton fire crews respond to about 70 calls a year.

There is an open house at the new Baldwin Station tonight until 8 p.m.
