Several People Killed In Fiery Crash Near Stanley

Posted:

Several people are dead following a fiery crash this morning just east of Stanley at a busy intersection.

Authorities say dense fog was blanketing the area and played a big part in the crash which involved numerous vehicles.

Shaun Sipma has the latest details on the accident.

<<Authorities are continuing to piece together the tragic details of what happened at 6:40 this morning 2 miles east of Stanley.

(Ken Halvorson, Mountrail County Sheriff) "We have multiple vehicles, we have approximately six vehicles, we have some multiple fatalities."

Mountrail County Sheriff Ken Halvorson says because of the flames, burning petroleum product, the number of vehicles, some underneath others, and the risk to emergency officials in trying to extinguish the flames authorities aren't able to say exactly how many people are involved.

(Ken Halvorson, Mountrail County Sheriff) "It initially started that we had a oil tanker, oil field tanker that was going to the North and got clipped by a vehicle that was going to the west here on Highway 2 and that began the pile-up."

The heat from the fire was so intense that at least one vehicle and one trailer burned to its shell.

Two semis and four other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Authorities are continuing to investigate and will release more details as they become available.
