(Ken Halvorson, Mountrail County Sheriff) "We have multiple vehicles, we have approximately six vehicles, we have some multiple fatalities."
Mountrail County Sheriff Ken Halvorson says because of the flames, burning petroleum product, the number of vehicles, some underneath others, and the risk to emergency officials in trying to extinguish the flames authorities aren't able to say exactly how many people are involved.
(Ken Halvorson, Mountrail County Sheriff) "It initially started that we had a oil tanker, oil field tanker that was going to the North and got clipped by a vehicle that was going to the west here on Highway 2 and that began the pile-up."
The heat from the fire was so intense that at least one vehicle and one trailer burned to its shell.
Two semis and four other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Authorities are continuing to investigate and will release more details as they become available.
