Acting NDUS Chancellor Aims To "Calm The Waters"

There has been conflict circling the North Dakota University System for years.

It has seemed like it doesn't matter who is in the Chancellor seat, drama has unfolded whether it be between the board and the chancellor or the legislature.

But the man chosen to temporarily take the reigns wants to -- settle things down when it comes to Higher Ed in North Dakota.

Donnell Preskey has the story.

<< His job is to lead Bismarck State College. Now Larry Skogen is charged with a bigger role... Lead North Dakota's University System at a very turbulent time.

"We need to calm the waters starting with the system office and then across the state with the whole system", Dr. Larry Skogen says.

The Board of Higher Education asked Skogen to take over the Chancellor's role until they find an interim Chancellor.

A job he will juggle along with being the BSC President for 60 days.

"My personal agenda is so that in Higher Education, whether we're in higher education or it's North Dakotan's talking about higher education, I want us to get to the point where we're talking about educating students, we're talking about student outcomes. I'll know we've healed if that becomes the dominant part of our conversation," Dr. Larry Skogan says.

As one of his first duties, Skogen met with employees at the University System office today.

"I told folks this morning that if we're going to calm the water and get moving in the right direction we're going to have to do this as a team," says Dr. Larry Skogen.

There will be a national search for the interim Chancellor. A position Skogen says he is not interested in.

Even given the turmoil in North Dakota's Higher Education system over the past few years, Skogen is confident a reputable leader will emerge.

"Position in higher education, administrative position are saught after positions there will always be folks interested in taking on those challenges," says Dr. Larry Skogen>>

North Dakotan's will be voting in November 2014 on changing the Higher Education management system to a three person commission.

Skogen says the current system with a board and a Chancellor is the best fit.
