Battling Mosquitoes

Posted: Updated:

Summer's arrival in the region has been welcomed by many...

Plenty of people...and millions of mosquitoes.

Those pesky little guys are everywhere it seems -- and has outdoor activities a little tougher to handle.

Perry Olson was out today seeing how people were handling it.

(Perry Olson - KX News) "A walk in the park right now in this region isn't exactly a walk in the park...lots of mosquitoes out there so you probably don't want to go outside unless you have something like this...gotta protect yourself from all the bugs outside right now."

(Jill Meyer - Minot) "It has been crazy this year...I have lots of mosquito bites and they are really big!"

They do seem to be everywhere this year -- lots of rain has lead to lots of standing water...and now the warmth -- its a perfect storm really for a bumper crop of mosquitoes...

(Mike Wilson - KMart Manager) "I know I was mowing my lawn this week and I must have been like an air craft carrier to these kamikaze mosquitoes because they sure got me! I am not mowing my lawn this week until I get the mosquito repellant in."

Mike can't even go buy some from his store -- KMart is sold out...a common problem around the region.

(Mike Wilson - KMart Manager) "This is the last of the mosquito repellant that we have here. All this last week every other customer in the store has asked for it." (KMart Customer) "Spray on...do you have any by chance?" (Mike) "I don't...sorry...I've got more coming next week. We are wiped out of it...just wiped out of it!"

Some have been lucky enough to get their hands on some...like Meyer. A native a Germany, these pests are new to her...

(Jill Meyer - Minot) "We have bug spray...so I keep her sprayed down and hope that no mosquitoes are coming to bite her!"

Her 15 month old daughter is still enjoying the outside...as are the Matterns -- they are lifelong Minot residents...and smart walkers here in Oak Park...

(Ray Mattern) "We got this here gadget right here and this keeps them off! It works."

(Marlyn Mattern) "He just sprayed my back because I was getting bit again!"

Hopefully the situation improves soon. This Sunday the city of Minot is set for an aerial spraying...and Williston will get a second pass next Monday...with the hope going outside won't require this as much. In Minot, Perry Olson, KX News.

Air Force Reserve spraying for mosquitoes over Minot and Williston is scheduled to begin Sunday and continue into next week.
