Tribes Christen Riverboat

Posted: Updated:

Today's sunny skies and warm weather made for the perfect day to set sail on Lake Sakakawea.

The Three Affiliated Tribes at the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation unveiled their new riverboat called Sacagawea.

Discussions about the riverboat began last year and it is now making its debut just in time for Independence day.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held today before Sacagawea set out on its two-hour voyage on the water.

The riverboat is currently operating as a private vessel for those who have earned enough points at the 4 bears casino.

Later this month, the riverboat will become a commercial vessel and anyone wishing to ride on it will be able to purchase a ticket.

In 2014, gambling will be allowed on the riverboat.

Tribal chairmen, Tex Hall, says the riverboat helps tell the history of the tribes.

(Tex Hall, Tribal Chairmen)"We're really excited about a breakthrough and how we can come back and capture the river. Our ancestors have always had historical ties to the river so it's a great significance and historical moment for us at the tribe."

Sacagawea will also leave the dock tomorrow for the fourth of July.

Anyone interested in checking out the riverboat can call the 4 bears casino for information.
