Hazen Celebrates Centennial

Posted: Updated:

This year marks the centennial for the town of Hazen, North Dakota.

Stephanie Scheurer takes us to this small but thriving community.

Families from all around the area gather under the sunny skies to celebrate Hazen's heritage.

"It's just nice to get everybody back together that's been here and has called Hazen home for all of these years," says Susan Gress, Centennial Committee Member.

Ron Crowley was born right here 63 years ago.

This building used to be the Hazen Hospital.

"The activity in the community you know bringing everybody back home to you know celebrate our birthday," says Ron Crowley.

A book on the history of Mercer County says Hazen is named after Postmaster General Hazen.

"Hazen was founded just like all the other towns along the rail was because the rail had been built and they needed places to refuel and and replenish water supply," says Mark Nygard, Mayor of Hazen."

Standup: "This community has grown and changed over the years but for many residents, no matter what, this will always be their home."

I love the small town community. It's just great, they've really opened up and a great place to raise family. I have two little kids so it's just - the small town, everyone knows everyone," says Kolie Kadrmas, Exec. Director, Hazen Chamber of Commerce."

And for Ron, 63 years is just the beginning.

"I plan to be here the rest of my life."

In Hazen, Stephanie Scheurer, KX News.

The Centennial Celebration continues through Sunday.
