How Honest Are North Dakotans? One Company Sets Out To Find Out

Posted: Updated:

How honest is North Dakota?  That question is being put to the test today in Bismarck.

"So far, you all have been fairly honest," says Brian Laridis of HONEST Tea.  What does that mean?  All Brian does is laugh at that one.

HONEST Tea is putting America to an honesty test.  Unmanned kiosks stocked with the drinks invite people to take a bottle -- in exchange for a dollar.  It's all on the honor system.
Bismarck is representing North Dakota in the 50-state social experiment.

"There's a lot of honest people around here, and I would say they would even pay $1.50, if they had to," says Mary Braddock of Bismarck.

The company is rather stealthy in its approach -- going to such lengths as to require Brian, the undercover honesty detective, to keep switching it up.  "We'll switch out clothes, so we don't seem like we're loitering and people don't think, 'that person is probably watching the stand.'  So it just gives a feeling that people are not being watched by like a big brother kind of thing," says Laridis.
Once the company compiles their results, they'll be able to tell you things like whether blondes are more honest than brunettes, and if people who wear sunglasses tend to drop their dollars more often than not.  As for how the actual monitoring takes place -- "I, well, uh, um (laughing)," replies Laridis.  Apparently, the company's scientific method is top secret -- but they stress the experiment is just for fun.

So how good is this stuff, and more importantly, how honest are people in North Dakota?
You'll have to wait until July 23rd, when HONEST Tea posts their honesty results at
