Semi Carrying Potato Chips Catches Fire On I-94

Posted:

Potato chips litter interstate 94 this afternoon.

This "Lays" trailer caught fire around noon today in the west bound lane of Interstate 94 near the Sterling exit.

Westbound traffic was rerouted at the Sterling exit on to old highway ten.

Several kinds of chips including doritos, lays, and fritos littered the interstate as a result of the fire.

The North Dakota highway patrol says the rear tires caught fire due to a bearing getting hot.

The driver of the semi received no injuries from the blaze.

"When we arrived on scene the trailer was parked here and the driver managed to unhook his power unit the trailer was already engulfed in flames, reason we shut down traffic was the tires on the trailer were exploding from the heat and just the closeness of the roadway to the fire itself we had to shut it down," Trooper Timothy Coughlin said.

The interstate opened up for west bound drivers around 2 p.m. this afternoon.
