The ND National Guard Takes On Community Project

Posted: Updated:

Fairview Cemetery in Bismarck is expanding with the help of the North Dakota National Guard.

The 816th Engineer Company based in Dickinson is using its excavation equipment to level a hill.

This project is part of their Innovative Readiness Training or IRT program.

The program focuses on education and job training, health and medical services, and civil engineering projects.

Projects like this one give soldiers in training hands-on experience while helping out a community.

"When they can actually have a lasting project, they care a lot more about what they're doing and they take the time to get better. And I've had people tell me who helped on previous IRT projects where I happened to be in the vicinity, they find out I'm with the Guard and they love to tell me 'I was a part of that, I helped make that,'" says 1st Lt. Lorna Meidinger, Project Officer.

The cemetery project is set to be complete by the 24th of July.
