10-Year-Old Helps Rescue Young Swimmer

Posted: Updated:

A little girl from Belfield says she is not a very strong swimmer yet.

Her town pool is closed, so her grandparents are taking her and her brothers to the lake to practice.

"This is my first time learning how to swim..."

She turns 11 in August, but Mackenzie Wilkinson is still pretty green when it comes to swimming.

"We just started yesterday..."

"Our grand kids, the two younger ones can't swim, that's why they have life jackets on." says Bob Henderson and Jean Henderson, grandparents from Redding CA.

Since the Belfield pool is closed, Mackenzie's grandparents take them to the nearest lake southwest of Dickinson.

"It's important for kids to know how to swim." says Bob.

Mackenzie was put to the test one day earlier as she went from a beginner swimmer to a responder.

She spotted a little boy wearing a life vest who was face down in the water, unable to turn over.

"I was out here swimming and little boys and girls came out because it was their birthday party, and then I saw a little boy face down in the water, and then I went out there with my noodle to get him, I grabbed him, he holded on to the noodle, then I brought him up to shore." says Mackenzie, 10-year-old.

"There was about a half a dozen kids out there together, I had looked away for a few seconds, this lady ran down and grabbed a little boy from Mackenzie--I knew something had happened I didn't know what." says Bob Henderson, Mackenzie's grandpa.

"A lot of kids would just sit there and watch and not react because they wouldn't know what to do, you know, she didn't react the way most kids, she grabbed the kid and pulled him up on the noodle." says Dean Henderson, Mackenzie's grandma.

"The lady come over and says that little girl saved my baby--pretty special." says Bob.

"I think it's inspired her to learn how to swim." says Jean.

She may not be the best swimmer yet, but Mackenzie has already shown some strong instincts on the water.

"It'll make me feel like want to help others, help more people." says Mackenzie.

Mackenzie says she wants to take swimming lessons for the first time, next summer,

She turns 11 years old on August 8th.
