Jail Plans Hinge on Paper Decision

Posted: Updated:

Ward County officials are getting closer to finalizing plans for the expansion project that voters approved last year.

That growth includes much needed space for the often filled Ward County jail.

There are currently three options for building on the table...and one is easily the best option...

Looking out the east windows of the current jail you can see the Minot Daily News building...

To grow the jail as officials want, a deal must be struck with the paper to take over their parking lot that sits north of the jail.

That would allow for the expansion of the footprint of the jail, as Kukowski wants...it's his best case scenario.

(Steve Kukowski - Ward County Sheriff) "It depends on working a deal with the Minot Daily News. If we can secure a deal for their parking lot then our number one plan will go through. If not then we have to use our number two plan. We are still about 30 days out from coming to an agreement with the Minot Daily News and once that is settled we will proceed with that."

If that deal can't be made, the jail would have to be built up, not out -- and that would come with a bigger cost for both construction, and staffing once it is completed.
