Last season the U Mary Football team rushed for less than 100 yards per game, and just 9 touchdowns.
1 thousand and 47 yards is the fewest rushing yards in the last 4 years. This year-- the Marauders know that must change.
But with no dominant back they'll need a full stable of rushers.
Jon Schaeffer has more.
Jon Schaeffer-KX Sports: The University of Mary has 6 running backs competing for the top spot on the depth chart at fall camp -- including returners Dariouse Gravely and Adam Woroniecki. That depth is pushing the backs to perform at a high level.
DARIOUSE GRAVELY-U Mary Running Back: "It's pretty intense. Even like some of the freshmen. They're looking really nice. I'm looking at them like maybe I slacked a little bit today I gotta get in more film. Do some more studying write some plays down you know just get to it ask the coaches so I mean competition is at a high level right now."
Jon Schaeffer-KX Sports: U Mary is coming off an injury riddled 2012 season where they rushed for just over 1000 yards as a team.
MYRON SCHULZ-U Mary head coach: "What happened last year was Dupree Calestine was supposed to be one of our top backs and he got injured in the Winona game. Dariouse was banged up the first half of the season so it's one of those things where we got depleted."
Jon Schaeffer-KX Sports: The Marauders didn't have the luxury of rolling through a group of running backs.
This year that should change
ADAM WORONIECKI-U Mary Running Back: "We got a lot of guys that can you know I think we've shown that we've all got a shot to do something well there's not really someone who like rises above. We think they're going to try and work us in at some point."
Jon Schaeffer-KX Sports: Gravely led the team in rushing with 506 yards last season. This year he's looking to improve but he has bigger goals for the running back group as a whole.
DARIOUSE GRAVELY-U Mary Running Back: "We want at least five yards per carry from everybody. If I go down and someone new came in even if it's a freshman coming in I expect them to get five yards per carry. That should be the expectation of all the running backs."
MYRON SCHULZ-U Mary Head Coach: "I think they're all capable of it. The one thing is you gotta get your carries the thing is we know if we rotate more guys through maybe our whole team gets 2 thousand yard rusher."
Jon Schaeffer-KX Sports: The Marauders also have a returning quarterback priming their offense to see success if everyone can stay healthy.
Establishing the run game will be key.
For KX sports Jon Schaeffer.
U Mary starts their season on September 7th.
They host Minnesota State Mankato, considered the best team in the NSIC conference.
