Group of Parents Want School to Start After Labor Day

Posted:

Many schools in North Dakota start class this week while others are already hitting the books.

A group of parents want to change the date when kids head back to class.

Tomorrow is the first day of school for Bismarck students and on Thursday Mandan students will be heading back to class

But with temperatures still in the 80's and 90's parents want school to start after Labor Day so families can enjoy the warmest days of summer.

In order to do that they'll have to gather at least 13,500 signatures in order to put a measure on the ballot for the November 2014 election.

<<On a hot summer day, a group of parents gather to share their concerns about starting school in August.

"We've just been waiting for changes and it never happens and finally we got together and said lets start it, so here we are on a 90 degree day when school starts tomorrow," Kelly Heinert said.

Kelly Heinert says they want to change one sentence in North Dakota's Century Code which defines the school year calendar.

"It's so simple, start school after labor day, we want to make it simple that's why we're changing one sentence, start school after labor day period," Heinert said.

Parents like Melodie Zimmerman agree, the weather in May and the beginning of June is much cooler than the end of August.

"The nicest weather has always been at the end of the summer, that's when North Dakota's weather shines is in August and September and so then the kids are already back in school," Melodie Zimmerman said.

That's why these parents want to change the school calendar year so kids can enjoy the nicest days of the summer.

"You can't change the weather in North Dakota, weather is the weather and North Dakotans love to talk about the weather I mean that's one of our favorite topics, we can't change it, but what we can change is the school calendar to match the weather," Heinert said.

Again the group needs to collect the 13,500 signatures by August of 2014 in order to get a measure on the November 2014 ballot which would give voters the decision on whether or not school should start after Labor Day.
