Two Minot Police officers were injured Friday night after chasing a suspect in northwest Minot on foot.
That suspect was eventually taken into custody, but not before assaulting the two officers -- knocking one unconscious.
It all started when police responded to a report of suspected drug activity in a vehicle parked outside an apartment complex.
Perry Olson has the details that include many more arrests, all members of the Minot State University Beaver Football team.
Five men -- all from out of state and in Minot attending Minot State as members of the MSU football team were arrested last night after a stop involving drugs not far from the MSU campus. The men are 22 year old Kwajo Bonsu, 19 year old Thomas Armstrong, 18 year old Grant Jansen, and 21 year old Leon Ladeaux...those four were charged with two drug related misdemeanors. A 5th, 21 year old Jesse Ili faces far greater charges -- including attempted murder after he fled the area, and eventually assaulted an officer.
(Capt. John Klug - Minot Police Department) "The one person who was ultimately arrested on the majority of the charges...he was the first one to flee. They were dealing with him and he fled on foot. They got him but that is where the fight ensued."
That fight -- that didn't involve any weapons --occurred very close to the Valley Terrace Apartment complex on 8th Street NW and was so severe, one officer was knocked unconscious.
(Capt. John Klug - Minot Police Department) "That physical altercation led to some significant injuries to one of the officers and ultimately one of the officers was knocked out and taken to Trinity. The other officer had minor injuries."
That second officer was also taken to the hospital -- though by another officer, not an ambulance. Both officers are reported to be in good condition and both are at home resting according to Klug. Klug says in conferencing with the state's attorney, it was decided attempted murder should be charged -- and that is the most serious charge facing Mr. Ili today.
The investigation continues...including a search for another person...
(Capt. John Klug - Minot Police Department) "There is a sixth person who we have not ID'd yet. We are hoping at some point that person comes forward or we get the information needed to ID who that person is."
Saturday afternoon, Minot State released a statement saying the five players had been suspended, and that no further comment would be coming from officials at the school until more information was made available. In Minot, Perry Olson, KX News.
The names of the police officers involved in that altercation last night have not yet been made public.
Minot State's 2013 football season starts next week in St. Paul, Minnesota.
