The race for mayor of the city of Minot began today as the first candidate announced his intent.
Chuck Barney officially announced his intention to run for mayor in 2014.
While Minot's economy is booming, Barney says there are unique challenges in expanding and also in recovering from the 2011 flood.
Barney says he's spent a lot of time visiting with people and getting a sense of what the city needs.
The two recurring themes in his conversations are quality of life in Minot, and property taxes.
(Chuck Barney, City of Minot Mayoral Candidate) "We need to find ways that we can work together and use our tax base efficiently, instead of duplicating services and facilities, we need to find ways that we can work together."
Barney is a long-time Minot resident who served three terms as 4th Ward Alderman, two terms as city council president, and seven years as finance committee chairman.
He has also served on various boards such as the Convention and Visitor's Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce.
(Chuck Barney, City of Minot Mayoral Candidate) "The last 12-13 years I've been involved with city government, so I know the issues and I know how the system works. But it's a big step. It's a big step from being on the council to being the mayor."
The city of Minot mayor seat is currently by Curt Zimbelman who earlier this summer announced his intention to not seek re-election.
Local elections will be held on June 10, 2014.
