Strasburg School Bond Fails

Residents in Strasburg vote against renovating part of the towns school.

The bond failed by 18 votes.

The $2.9 million bond would've allowed the district to tear down an old portion of the Strasburg school and rebuild it.

This afternoon we caught up with staff and voters who were in favor of the bond.

"The floor is bad, the ceiling is bad, and the wiring and that's where our kitchen is and we need a new kitchen along with it," Athletic Director Brent Kleinsasser said.

This portion of the Strasburg school has been in use for nearly 80 years and it's now time to replace it.

"We will be able to remove this 1935 building that's right behind me and build a new kitchen cafeteria for the students and gymnasium," Superintendent Mary Larson said.

Larson says because of the facilities condition right now activities are limited for students.

"It's going to cost a lot to bring this up to date, so the board of education decided it would be a much better idea just to build it new," Larson said.

One resident who showed up to vote attended school here, and says the renovations are much needed.

"I think it'd be a real asset for the town and community to do something for the upcoming children because education is number one and we do need a new facility," Ramona Reis said.

"We're just trying to upgrade the school to make it so the kids have a nicer place to come to every morning and just an upgrade to the town," Keinsasser said.

Strasburg's enrollment is 150 students.

Again the bond failed by 18 votes.
